5 Reasons Why Keeping Girls in Sport is Critically Important
Last updated:June 9th, 2025
At Alpha-Era Girls Hockey Company, we are deeply committed to not just teaching girls how to skate faster, train harder, or compete stronger—but also helping them stay in sport for the long haul. Every time a girl laces up her skates, ties her cleats, or pulls on her jersey, she’s doing more than just playing a game. She’s developing the confidence, resilience, and leadership skills that will serve her for life.
But we know the reality: by age 14, girls are dropping out of sports at twice the rate of boys. That’s not a stat we can accept. We have to ask ourselves—what are we doing to keep girls in the game, and more importantly, why does it matter so much?
Here are five compelling reasons why keeping girls in sport is not just important—it’s essential.
Sport Builds Confidence and Self-Esteem Confidence is a skill—just like skating, shooting, or sprinting. And sport is one of the most powerful tools for building it. For girls, being on a team, setting goals, and pushing physical limits helps them learn what they’re capable of beyond what they thought possible. It shows them that strength isn’t just physical—it’s emotional, mental, and deeply personal. Studies show that girls who play sports have higher levels of confidence and self-worth than those who don’t. They’re also more likely to speak up in class, take on leadership roles, and advocate for themselves in all areas of life. At Alpha-Era Girls Hockey Company, we see this firsthand—when a girl masters a new skill, completes a tough workout, or earns her spot on a roster, she walks away taller. That internal “I can do this” voice gets louder. And that voice matters, especially in a world that too often tells girls to shrink themselves.
It Keeps Them Mentally and Physically Healthy Girls today are under more pressure than ever—socially, academically, digitally. Physical activity is a powerful antidote. Beyond the obvious physical benefits like stronger bones, muscles, and cardiovascular health, sport offers massive mental health payoffs. Girls who play sports are less likely to experience anxiety and depression, and more likely to feel connected, focused, and emotionally regulated. Team environments give girls a sense of belonging—a sisterhood. They learn how to handle stress, how to support teammates, and how to bounce back from failure. Sport becomes their outlet, their safe space, and in many cases, their sanctuary. We prioritize this in our programs. Dryland training, power skating, and conditioning aren’t just about physical gains—they’re about mental toughness, stress relief, and creating routines that fuel total well-being.
Sport Teaches Leadership and Life Skills The hockey rink, the court, and the gym are classrooms in their own right. In sport, girls learn how to lead, how to follow, how to work as a team, and how to make tough decisions under pressure. They learn how to set goals, deal with setbacks, and stay committed even when things get hard.
These are the same skills that will carry them into boardrooms, medical labs, classrooms, and communities as confident adult women. According to research conducted in 2015, 94% of women in executive-level positions played sports growing up. This is not a coincidence. Sport creates leaders. It builds grit, accountability, and the ability to lead with both strength and empathy.
At Alpha-Era Girls Hockey Company, we coach leadership as much as we coach fitness. Whether it’s assigning team roles, giving feedback, or mentoring younger athletes, we believe every girl has the potential to lead—on and off the ice, court, and track.
It Challenges Gender Norms and Builds Strong Role Models Every time a girl participates in sport, she challenges outdated gender norms. She redefines what it means to be strong, competitive, and capable. In doing so, she becomes a role model—not just for younger girls, but for her community, her school, and the next generation. When girls see women coaching them, cheering them on, and building careers in sport, it reinforces a simple but powerful truth: this space belongs to them. We believe in “if she can see it, she can be it.” That’s why Alpha-Era Girls Hockey Company is led by women, for girls. Our athletes know we’ve been in their skates, we’ve had their dreams, and we’re here to help them chase theirs.
Keeping girls in sport isn’t just about today’s practice—it’s about building a world where female athletes, coaches, and leaders are seen, heard, and celebrated.
It Opens Doors to Opportunities—Athletic, Academic, and Beyond From scholarships and university programs to national teams and professional leagues, staying in sport can open doors that change a girl’s life trajectory. But it’s not just about athletic success. Girls in sport are more likely to finish school, attend college, and engage in their communities in meaningful ways. They learn discipline, time management, and how to navigate pressure. They build networks, mentors, and friendships that last a lifetime. And as more opportunities open up—like the launch of the PWHL (Professional Women’s Hockey League)—girls can now dream bigger than ever. But they need the support and resources to stay in the game long enough to get there.
That’s what we’re building atAlpha-Era Girls Hockey Company—a system that keeps girls engaged, empowered, and excited about their future in sport.
Final Thoughts If we want to build a stronger future for girls, we need to keep them in sport. Not just because they might win a game or score a goal, but because every moment on the ice or in the gym is shaping who they’re becoming. Confident. Tough. Capable. Unstoppable.
At Alpha-Era Girls Hockey Company, this is our mission. We create spaces where girls feel seen, supported, and strong. Because when we invest in girls through sport, they learn to invest in themselves—and that changes everything. If you’re a parent, a coach, a mentor, or an athlete reading this, know that keeping girls in sport is one of the most impactful things we can do. Let’s keep them moving, growing, and thriving—in the zone and far beyond it.
