What We Teach

AtAlpha-Era Girls Hockey, every session—on or off the ice—is grounded in technical excellence and purpose-driven coaching. These aren’t just drills. They’re the foundational tools that fuel real growth.

On-Ice Power Skating: Core Skill Sets

Each skating session is built around the following five performance pillars:

1. Edge Control

Why it matters: Edges are the foundation of all skating. Great skaters control inside and outside edges with precision.

What we teach: Deep knee bends, weight transfer, edge rolls, balance drills, and one-foot glides.

2. Stride Efficiency

Why it matters: A powerful stride isn’t about speed—it’s about clean mechanics, extension, and recovery.

What we teach: Full leg extension, strong toe flick, smooth recovery under the body, and proper arm drive.

3. Acceleration Techniques

Why it matters: Winning the puck starts with explosive first strides.

What we teach: Forward start mechanics, low stance, crossover starts, and fast, controlled feet.

4. Lateral Mobility & Crossovers

Why it matters: Game-play is multi-directional. Crossovers help players attack, defend, and change direction fluidly.

What we teach: Tight and wide crossovers, lateral pushes, inside leg strength, and speed through turns.

5. Transitions & Agility

Why it matters: Quick forward-to-back transitions create game-changing moments.

What we teach: Mohawk turns, fast pivots, heel-to-heel work, and smooth body rotation with active feet.

Off-Ice Dryland Fitness: Training Tools for Real Strength

Our dryland fitness programs are designed to support skating performance, reduce injury, and help young athletes develop a strong foundation for all sports.

Available in 3–12 month memberships
(Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced | All skill levels welcome)

1. Proper Movement Mechanics

Why it matters: Safe, efficient movement reduces injury and improves overall athletic ability.

What we teach: Squat, hinge, lunge, push, pull, and core activation with posture and alignment focus.

2. Bodyweight Strength & Stability

Why it matters: Girls need body control before progressing to resistance training.

What we teach: Planks, push-ups, glute bridges, single-leg balance, and tension-based strength drills.

3. Introduction to Weight Training

Why it matters: Strength builds resilience, power, and confidence.

What we teach: Safe lifting techniques using light weights—goblet squats, dumbbell rows, RDLs, and presses.

4. Speed, Agility & Quickness (SAQ)

Why it matters: Agility and reaction time translate directly to on-ice speed and awareness.

What we teach: Ladder drills, resisted sprints, cone shuffles, and lateral jump progressions.

5. Core Strength & Functional Power

Why it matters: A strong core supports shooting power, balance, and contact control.

What we teach: Anti-rotation drills, med ball slams, dead bugs, and dynamic stabilization exercises.

Coach Samantha is an incredible coach who truly believes in her players! She encouraged our daughter to explore her passion for goalie. Her guidance, support, and enthusiasm have made a huge difference in her hockey journey. We're so grateful!
T. Agarwal
Sam was my youngest daughter’s coach for her first season of playing hockey. She created a warm and welcoming environment on the ice and in the dressing room. Her enthusiastic coaching style inspired my daughter try out and play for rep hockey next year!
J. Drexler
My daughter had an incredible experience being coached by Sam. Her mix of high-level skill development, positivity, and genuine care made every session something she looked forward to. Sam not only pushed the girls to improve on the ice, but built their confidence off it too. It’s clear she’s passionate about helping girls grow as athletes and as people—and it shows in everything she does. We feel lucky to have had her as a coach!
J. Ariganello
Coach Sam trained our daughter through her first season of house league hockey. Watching the growth of both her individually as a player and the team as a whole, was amazing. Sam really taught these girls how to work as a team and gave them the skills they needed to thrive on the rink! Our daughter fell in love with hockey this season and we know that Coach Sam played a huge part in that.
M. Percival
Sports are essential for building capacity and the confidence life demands to persevere. Sam embodies, encourages, and facilitates this in her daughters and hockey girls everywhere. She understands the importance and impact of hockey and appreciates the full circle of being able to give back to a sport that has given her so much all while empowering young girls today to be fierce.
