Every hockey team is different.
Female athletes arrive with different strengths, experience levels, learning styles and developmental needs. Coaches also have their own systems, priorities and goals for the season. That is why effective team training should never be a one-size-fits-all experience.
Alpha Girls Hockey provides customized development support for OWHA teams from U7 through U22. We collaborate with each team’s coaching staff to identify its needs and create purposeful training sessions that complement the work already happening throughout the season.
Whether a team needs stronger skating foundations, better puck movement, increased confidence in physical play or a deeper understanding of team systems, Alpha team training is designed around the athletes in front of us.
Customized team training begins with a conversation.
Before stepping onto the ice, Alpha connects with the team’s coaching staff to understand:
From there, we develop a training plan suited to the team.
This may include a single focused clinic, a short series of progressive sessions or an ongoing seasonal development program. Training can support one specific area or combine multiple components into a complete team development curriculum.
Alpha team training can include:
Strong skating is the foundation of every player’s game.
Power-skating sessions may focus on:
The complexity and intensity of the instruction are adjusted to the team’s age and level. A U7 session may concentrate on balance, movement, safe falling and getting back up, while an older competitive team may work on explosive acceleration, deception, lateral movement and position-specific skating patterns.
Alpha helps athletes develop the technical tools they need to play with greater confidence and creativity.
Training may include:
Skills are taught progressively before being placed into game-like situations. This helps athletes understand not only how to perform a skill, but when and why to use it.
Forwards and defenders experience the game differently. Position-specific instruction allows athletes to develop the habits, movement patterns and decisions most relevant to their roles.
Forward development may include:
Defence development may include:
Training can be delivered to forwards and defenders separately before bringing the entire team together to apply those concepts.
Physical play should be introduced progressively, safely and confidently.
Alpha’s body contact and battle instruction helps athletes become more comfortable initiating, receiving and navigating contact. Depending on the age and level of the team, sessions may include:
The goal is not simply to make athletes more physical. It is to help them understand how to use their bodies effectively, protect themselves and compete with confidence.
Technical skills are most valuable when athletes can apply them at the right moment.
Hockey IQ training develops awareness, anticipation and decision-making. Athletes learn to recognize pressure, identify available space, support teammates and make purposeful choices with and without the puck.
Sessions may focus on:
Rather than giving athletes every answer, Alpha creates environments in which they learn to read the game and solve problems.
Alpha can also reinforce the systems and concepts selected by the team’s coaching staff.
This may include:
System instruction is always coordinated with the team’s coaches. Our role is to support their direction, provide clear teaching progressions and help athletes understand both their individual responsibilities and how those responsibilities connect to the full team.
Small-area games, or SAGs, are an important part of player development because they recreate the pressure, decisions and competition of a game in a condensed space.
Depending on the chosen rules and format, small area games can encourage:
Small area games are not included simply as a fun way to finish practice. Each game is selected with a specific developmental objective and provides athletes with an opportunity to apply the session’s teaching in a realistic environment.
Every session is designed according to the team’s needs, but a typical structure may include:
1. Dynamic warm-up: Athletes begin moving immediately through activities connected to the session’s theme.
2. Skill introduction: The primary skill or concept is introduced with clear, concise teaching points.
3. Progressive development: Athletes build the skill through purposeful drills or stations with a high level of movement and repetition.
4. Pressure and decision-making: Defenders, obstacles or competitive elements are added so athletes must execute under pressure.
5. Game application: A small-area game or team concept allows athletes to apply what they have learned.
6. Review: Key teaching points are reinforced and athletes leave understanding the purpose of the session.
For younger teams, sessions emphasize movement, fun, confidence, physical literacy, repetition and frequent puck touches. Instructions are kept simple and athletes are encouraged through patience, positivity and praise.
As athletes progress, sessions become more detailed, competitive and position-specific. Older teams are challenged to execute at speed, manage pressure, solve problems and transfer technical skills into team play.
Alpha’s goal is to become a development partner for the team and its coaches.
When teams select a multi-session training package, sessions can be organized into a progressive curriculum. Each practice builds upon previous teaching so that athletes have time to learn, apply and reinforce new skills.
Team coaches can also receive practice plans, teaching language and developmental feedback that help them continue reinforcing the material between Alpha sessions.
This collaborative approach creates consistency for the athletes. Instead of hearing disconnected messages from different instructors, players receive training that supports the team’s existing direction and season long objectives.
Alpha Era was built to develop more than hockey players.
Our coaching approach encourages athletes to become confident, resilient and engaged members of their teams. We want players to feel comfortable trying new things, making mistakes, responding to challenges and taking ownership of their development.
Through positive instruction and purposeful competition, athletes are encouraged to:
Empowerment builds belief. Resilience builds strength. Action builds change.
Alpha team development can be arranged as:
Sessions can be customized for house-league, select, rep and high-performance teams. The content, pace and teaching approach are adjusted to suit the athletes’ age, experience and competitive level.
If your team is looking for purposeful development that supports both its athletes and coaching staff, Alpha Girls Hockey would be pleased to build a customized training plan for you.
